Maximising Storage Efficiency and Predictability with Hikvision eDVRs
Hikvision, at the forefront of the security industry, has tackled the perennial challenge of recording high-quality video over extended periods with their cutting-edge range of eDVRs. These innovative devices incorporate Scene Adaptive Bitrate Control technology, revolutionising storage efficiency and enabling crystal-clear incident capture.
Historically, video has demanded copious amounts of storage. Conventional security video applications adhere to a constant bitrate, oblivious to the low-activity hours or nocturnal lulls. This approach leads to wasteful storage consumption, offering little value to customers.
The industry has pursued various technologies and strategies to optimise video storage, among them:
Variable Bitrate Technology:
By scrutinising the scene and adapting the bitrate according to complexity and activity levels, this technology showcases an advantage: as events unfold, the bitrate escalates, enhancing image quality. Nevertheless, the drawback lies in its unpredictable storage demands, leaving operators uncertain about how long footage will persist before being overwritten and erased.
Smart Coding with Constant Bitrate:
This method employs steady image compression to achieve predictability in storage and maximise efficiency. However, it falters in its unwavering bitrate, potentially compromising the effectiveness of incident response due to subpar image quality.
Hikvision, in a bold departure from these outdated approaches, employs the pioneering Scene Adaptive Bitrate Control technology to bolster storage efficiency. This groundbreaking technology is seamlessly integrated into all of Hikvision's new eDVRs, which harness the power of eSDD storage instead of traditional HDD drives.
To Optimise Storage
Hikvision eDVRs employ variable bitrates, temporarily allocating more storage for intricate scenes. During periods of camera inactivity, the bitrate undergoes a dramatic reduction, significantly conserving storage resources and extending the device's continuous recording capacity.
In the pursuit of predictability, the eDVRs analyse bitrate trends over preceding hours and days, meticulously allocating storage resources. Consequently, the device adapts to the dynamic security landscape in the short term, employing a variable bitrate, while maintaining a fixed code rate in the long term, ensuring video images are retained for the required duration before being overwritten—an impressive feat often spanning at least two weeks of uninterrupted recording.
As an Added Advantage
Hikvision eDVRs guarantee highly stable image compression of exceptional quality, ideally suited for security applications, enabling the capture of incidents with utmost clarity.
To substantiate the exceptional storage efficiency of their eDVRs, a live test was conducted in an industrial park using the 2MP eDVR model (DS-E04HQHI-B). This comprehensive trial involved four video feeds, each with a resolution of 1080 pixels and a frame rate of 15 per second.
Throughout the test, they meticulously recorded intricate scenes within our manufacturing facilities, encompassing roadways, interior areas, entrances, and exit points. The recording bitrate automatically adjusted in response to the fluctuating traffic and activity levels across all monitored zones, showcasing the adaptive nature of our technology.
In Conclusion
Remarkably, despite the variable bitrate, the Hikvision eDVR allocated its considerable 439 GB of available storage in an impressively stable manner. The test conclusively demonstrated the device's ability to record over 13 days of continuous footage, utilising a mere 33.7 GB of storage—a testament to the unparalleled efficiency and reliability of Hikvision's eDVRs.
